Endorsed

Dear Neighbors,

It’s been a very busy week, full of ups and downs.

Good news? My campaign for the Euclid School Board was unanimously endorsed by the Euclid Democratic Club. Two additional school board candidates also attended the endorsement meeting, Taneika Hill and Selina Wright, and I would welcome the chance to work them on the school board. I also support Richard Tolton who is endorsed by the Euclid Dems for City Council in Ward 2 — I think his place on council will be important to the collaboration we need between our city leadership and schools.

Thank you to everyone who has donated to support my campaign. To clear up some confusion — you don’t have to donate to receive a yard sign — but every $7 donated covers the approximate cost of yard sign. A $50 donation will allow me to purchase 5-7 more yard signs. (Yeah, I know, they aren’t cheap.) Once I’m elected, any remaining campaign funds will be donated to the Euclid Schools Foundation.

Bad news? Our football team lost, again, and the stands have very few people in them — not because we don’t have lots of football fans in Euclid, but because our ticket sales and student admissions have been strictly limited out of concern for safety following the Sept. 3 game against Cleveland Heights. I’m hoping we can make our way back to a full stadium again, where Panther Pride shines bright.

The marching band and drumline were awesome, though — it was my favorite week yet for them.

Also, the Ohio State House approved some pretty terrible maps this week. Ohio’s horrifically gerrymandered voting districts negatively affect schools, because the legislative decision makers for school funding and education policy do not represent the majority of Ohioans perspectives and values.

One thing people ask me about a lot is the issue of tax dollars and school funding, EdChoice vouchers, etc. I’ve had people tell my that I’m wrong about school vouchers causing harm to our public schools.

I’ve also had people tell me that I shouldn’t try to understand the school funding issue or try to explain it to other people — because it’s just too complicated. But I won’t accept that answer, and I have a responsiblity to hear the perspective of residents who agree with me and those who don’t. So rest assured, I will do my homework and continue to advocate for a more equitable school funding model, so that all students and families can continue to benefit from school choice without undermining public education.

Thank you, again, for helping reignite Panther Pride in our community!
